The Mystery L.A. VHS Tape!

Strong Kids

So for those that weren’t there on Friday night here’s the lowdown on that Mystery VHS tape that we were teasing you all with. In terms of things we’ve been looking for this was right up there close to the very top of the list, it was certainly our most sought after VHS tape for sure!

So what was it then? None other than: STRONG KIDS AGAINST CRIME!

Yes it’s the long unseen second video release from all-time Duke hero Mr. Sanford Strong! Since stumbling on his first tape release make years ago we’ve been searching far and wide for this follow up ever since, and on Friday night we finally got to watch it, and best of all we got to see it for the first time with all of you there!

Sanford is a retired LA police officer who went into the private security business and released one book and two VHS tapes on how to protect you and your family in dangerous situations. The first tape, Strong Against Crime, has become one of our most watched finds ever, and this is from two people who never re-watch anything. His advice, suggestions and presentation style has become so ingrained into my mind that I actually think I could react exactly how he wanted me to at the first sign of any danger either on the street or at home.

So yes you can see that we wanted to find this other tape so badly, so badly in fact that it became one of the driving factors behind me going to LA last month. You see the winner from last year’s Found Footage Battle Royale, The Sadist, had used clips from this tape in his footage last year. So I’d decided that if I made it to LA and got into the Battle Royale that I’d ask him if there was any possible way to get a DVD-R of the this most elusive tape!

Sanford Power

Little did I know that thanks to the generosity and kindness of The Sadist that I’d actually be coming back with the original VHS that he’d used for his clips! You see The Sadist was there and he turned out to be the kindest and most friendly guy in the world! He was amazed when I told him my story of how much we’d enjoyed his work last year and how we couldn’t believe that used some of the other Sanford tape. I explained how much we’d been looking for this follow-up and he said he’d love to help us out. I had no idea that he’d actually be so kind and generous as to actually give us the tape itself! All I can say is that we’ll be eternally grateful to him for that!

So how was it? Simply amazing, so worth the wait and such an incredible watch! I won’t say more than that as we’d love to screen it again sometime for everyone.

Also on Friday night Evrim went through the other VHS tapes that I’d picked up in LA, we watched a couple of minutes of each of these tapes on the night with everyone – suffice to say that Advanced Trading Applications Of Candlestick Charting got the biggest cheer of the night! I’ll be working on bringing you the best parts of these tapes over the next few weeks!

LA Finds

LA – VHS Style

ProfitVHS

Here we go with a little bit more info about what’s going to be happening on at The Duke on Friday and also how it all came about.

So of course the night is going to start with a brand new dose of Trailer Trash that I’ve cut together, all new super obscure finds just for you, don’t turn up late and miss it. Next up Evrim is going to host a special mini-VHS Experiment, now we do the experiments once in a while, it’s where we’ll take a chance on a bunch of tapes and just see what’s on them with you live on the night. There’s no pre-checking if it’s good material, no checking if the tapes are funny, no checking if that tapes even work, and that’s why it’s an experiment, it can go right or it can go wrong!

Tonight’s tapes are 8 different VHS titles that I picked up while I was in LA recently, I spent a lot of time in second hand stores and remarkably there’s still a lot of VHS to be picked up that way. Unlike here in the UK, or at least London, where even just finding a few VHS tapes is hard work.

Now the stuff I picked up isn’t movies, it’s instructional tapes, religious tapes and even some ones I’m not sure what they are, but they all looked at least funny. What’s great is that Evrim hasn’t seen them and he’ll only get to see them on the night, he’ll have to pick what we watch and how much of it we’ll see! That picture at the top of the page is one of the tapes for the night; now that could have anything on it!

After that we’ll be watching two very special VHS tapes in their entirety, both acquired while I was in LA and carried back in my hand luggage as they’re both so precious! The first is something kind of new and old at the same time, the second is a title we’ve been trying to find for years and I finally managed to lay my hands on it in LA. Come down and take a chance on these tapes, we’ll fill you in on the story behind them on the night and I can guarantee you that you’ll never see these anywhere else.

Also on the night we’ll be playing the clip that brought the house down at Everything Is Festival, it won the Everything Is Festival Found Footage Battle Royale and not only got the biggest response of the show, but got the biggest cheers and laughs of the entire festival, just wait until you see it, I’ve no idea how you’ll react to it!

So come and join us, it’s FREE ENTRY all night as always, so take a chance on something different, it’s also the first Duke night ever on a Friday!

Kyle Mooney & Nathan Fielder’s YouTube Treasures

One of the highlights from the recent LA visit to Everything Is Festival was Kyle Mooney & Nathan Fielder’s YouTube Treasures show! Which featured the two comedians screening their favourite YouTube finds infront of a live audience. There were some hilarious clips in here and even though I spend hours on YouTube each week I’d never seen any of these before. Sadly they’ve not released the playlist from the night, but I was there taking notes and I’ve done my best to reconstruct the playlist for you all out there, there’s a few clips missing so if anyone can add any of those then let me and I’ll update the playlist. Otherwise sit back and take a deep dive in YouTube with the playlist below!

Everything Is Terrible – Found Footage Battle Royale

Here’s all 6 clips that I created for the Everything Is Festival Found Footage Battle Royale 2014, sadly my first clip didn’t play well and I went out in the first round. I think if I’d have played my clips in reverse order I’d have done much better, but I had a great time there so it’s all good. Enjoy the clips!
