Here’s the second part of our look at the other comic book shop and other interesting adverts featured in the early issues of Starburst Magazine:
Starburst issue 2 – 1978 – Weird Fantasy Bookshop, 3 Lewisham Way, London, SE14. Never got to go to this place, I love the look of this ad though with it’s EC Comics style logo!
Starburst issue 16 – 1979 – Weird Fantasy
Starburst issue 14 – 1979 – Games Workshop, 1 Dalling Road, Hammersmith, London, W6. It’s role playing games but hey that’s close enough to comics and I’ve always wanted the Gamma World game!
Starburst issue 76 – 1984 – Heroes: The Comic Shop, 21 Canonbury Lane, Islington, London, N1 2SP
Starburst issue 12 – 1979 – Metropolitan Movies – Super 8MM genre films!
Starburst issue 11 – 1979 – Titan Distributors, the UK’s leading comics distributor.
One unexpected series of adverts that appeared in White Dwarf was the crossover of RPG games into the mainstream high street stores, surely a sign of how big the games were at the time, here’s the three adverts that appeared back in the 1980s.
Games Workshop / Top Man featured in White Dwarf 16 December / January 1979 / 1980
Selfridges featured in White Dwarf 81 September 1986
Debenhams featured in White Dwarf 83 November 1986
Games Workshop are the publisher / owner of White Dwarf magazine and their store adverts were in every issue in various different styles right from the start. I don’t really have any real personal connection with their stores, but it’s great to see the progression from the start as they grown and expand their shops across the country. Here’s a selection of the most interesting adverts from White Dwarf.
White Dwarf Issue 6 April May 1978
White Dwarf 10 December / January 1978 / 1979
Interesting to see computer / console games appear so early on!
White Dwarf 17 February March 1980
White Dwarf 18 April May 1980
White Dwarf 19 June July 1980
White Dwarf 22 December January 1980 / 1981
