Nine Worlds Sci-Fi VHS Mix!

We had a blast this weekend at the Nine Worlds Geekfest 2016, this was our fourth time there in a row and it’s always such a great convention. One of the highlights for us though was being able to screen the Nine Worlds Sci-Fi VHS Mix to everyone there, which was made up of these 6 vintage VHS tapes.

Nine Worlds VHS Sci-Fi

When we were at Nine Worlds in 2015 there was a table full of vintage VHS Sci-Fi tapes at the back of the screening room, which had been brought along by the friend of someone that had sadly passed away. The idea was to give the tapes away so other people could enjoy them and that they could live on, an idea we loved so much! So I went through everything there and took this handful of tapes with a thought of doing something special with them. The idea being that we could make these tapes live on even longer by bringing them back once again but in a different form.

So skip forward a year and we’re back at the festival with a special 10-minute mix featuring the funniest, oddest and most expected clips we could find from the tapes. We dropped this on everyone at the end of our first session, giving them the low down on the story of the tapes and why we’d done it. So here it is now for everyone to enjoy, get a load of the Nine Worlds Sci-Fi VHS Mix right here:

Up The Video Junction

Here’s a great short documentary looking at Up The Video Junction, practically London’s last video store. It’s a great look at what’s always been a fantastically fun place to browse, chat and buy obscure films. Do make a journey to this Camden Market institution before it’s gone! Find the store here.

O.C. & Stiggs meet the Mystery Trailers

Thanks so much to everyone who made it along last night to our Check The Gate 35MM screening of Robert Altman‘s very obscure O.C. & Stiggs, we hope you all made it through this very strange film in one piece. It was the perfect way to experience this unique entry in Altman’s filmography, on the big screen from a pristine looking 35MM print! A huge thanks to Paul and everyone at the Prince Charles Cinema for inviting us to be part of the season and big thanks to Park Circus for providing us with such a high quality print.

Plus we got to find out what was on the Mystery Trailer Reel as well, above are my notes I took while the trailer madness played out on the big screen, so what was on there? Here’s the full list:

Night Crossing (1982)

Sammy’s Super T-Shirt (1978)

Porky’s (1981)

The Rose (1979)

Never Cry Wolf (1983)

Water (1985)

The Peregrine Hunters (1978)

Crime Busters (1977)

The Fury (1978)

Firepower (1979)

Cocoon (1985)

Deep Waters (1978)

So we got super lucky with an incredibly fun and random selection, particularly the 3 super rare Children’s Film Foundation trailers, I knew there must have been a good reason I picked this reel up. Discovering what was on it with everyone last night was the perfect way to start the evening! Hope you all enjoyed them as much as we did!

The Mystery Trailer Reel

MysteryTrailers

This Wednesday night we’ll be hosting a rare 35MM screening  of Robert Altman’s little seen 1980s teen comedy O.C. & Stiggs as part of the Prince Charles Cinema’s Check The Gate season and this being The Duke we want to give you something more!

So we’re going to also be unleashing on you’re a Mystery 35MM Trailer Reel before the film, but what’s unique about this is that it’s even a mystery to us! Yes even we don’t know what’s on this reel so we’ll all be watching it for the first time together on Wednesday night. So how did this happen? Well it’s a simple case of me having picked up two very old looking reels of film a few years ago and then managing to lose the paperwork that came with them.

Normally I’m really good at documenting what we’ve got in our archive, writing everything down and keeping a running list of everything we’ve got, but somehow these two reels managed to slip through the net. Now I know one of the reels was supposed to be all adverts and the other was all trailers and I knew which was which, but I’ve now got no idea of what trailers are on the reel. The thing I figured is that there must have been a reason for me to pick this trailer reel up, there must have been something worth buying it for, but I can’t for the life of me remember what’s actually on it.

But there is one person who’s actually seen it, that’s our very good friend Russ who helps us out with all things film related, I had to ask him to watch the reel through and check that it’s in a playable state for the night, but he was sworn to secrecy about the actual content of the reel. But you know what he said about it? He said it’s REALLY GOOD!

So are you daring enough to come and join us to find out what’s on the reel? Do you want to also see a super rare 35MM screening of the Robert Altman film that no one seems to have ever heard of? If so then we’ll see you on Wednesday night at the Prince Charles Cinema for O.C. & Stiggs – book tickets here!
